Hope you heard the news that IBM Investing in smarter infrastructure will create more than 9,49,000 new jobs in 2009. Sam presented the concept "Smarter Planet" 30 days back to Obama before he swear as official president.
Exactly 30 days later ....
President Barack Obama met with Sam (Samuel J. Palmisano Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer,IBM) and a dozen other CEOs at the White House today to discuss the economic stimulus package for the United States. As Americans live in a complete digital world, Sam put forward his views infront based on To re-ignite economic growth... To create not just jobs, but 21st century jobs… and To invest in ways that build the basis of future competitiveness for the U.S. He came up with a SMARTER PLANET. Here are some views and thoughts i would like to share with you regarding Sam's smart Plan "Smarter Planet"!
What is Smarter Planet ?
I believe in most aspects of smarter planet. In the past 100 years...human population has never grown so fast..all due to cheap energy (=OIL) The age of oil is almost over. Human race will need to adapt very very fast or very bad things will happen....wars, famine, insects, disease plague, etc. The overall goal of Smarter Planet is to use these finite resources in the most efficient manner...hopefully preventing those potentially very bad consequences.
Is there any process or technology to achieve those?
They are coming up with lot of systematic process with respect to industrial sectors like retail, finance,banking,pharma,supplychain...etc.
Though it has bunch of mechanisms to achieve, Here few things i am trying to put forward...
1)New Intelligence - Add monitoring, instrumentation and communication capabilities to things that normally do not traditionally have them. Example are putting simple transducers in the support pylons of a bridge. These transducers will report back to a central computer that can alert people about many things... too much snow and ice, too much wind moving the bridge, too many cars and trucks, traffic accident since the weigh is heavy but not changing..etc. All devices will be connected and share information intelligently.
2) Retail - Examples are to Integrate RFID technologies (Radio Frequency Identification) with personal identifiable new tech payment systems so you will be directed to a particular part of the store based on your past purchases or preferences...(e.g. no need to send You to women's clothing :-) ) Or allow your cell phone to be your payment system (like that is being done in Asia today) where you do not need cash money are other cards. The RFID tags will tell the stores computer when items are being stolen or they are out of stock...that will tell the supplier to deliver more. For milk, fruits and vegetables the RFID tag can tell YOU the customer how long before milk goes bad or is rotten.
3) Energy - Add monitoring, instrumentation, and communication to the electric power grid, the end point meters and to individual devices in a business or home. The electrical wires or grid can be used as a communication path for all these devices (like ethernet antennae) Devices can be remotely turned off if there is a big spike in demand. Also people can track the power consumption of things (Refrigerator, oven, heater/air conditioner, etc.) and if they are very inefficient than maybe you should buy a new one and recycle the old one. All of this monitoring can lead to overall more efficient energy usage for everyone (less waste, less CO2, less fuel) --> thus the smarter planet.There are more and more of innovative planet technics like BroadBand, Infrastructure, Traffic ... etc..!

There is no reason to undertake projects simply for the sake of activity. Rather than simply stimulate, let’s seize this opportunity to transform our country’s infrastructure and economy… to create more and better jobs… and to develop new and more valuable skills.
This is all possible because this crisis coincides with important developments in technology and how it is being applied to solve real problems.
Our country must compete in a world that isn’t just getting smaller and “flatter,” but is also becoming smarter. Intelligence is being infused into the infrastructures, systems and processes that enable economies and societies to run.
And this phenomenon is inherently global. As you state so well, Mr. President, not only must we invest in our economy to be truly competitive, but our economy must engage the global economy in order to be successful.
Smarter infrastructure is by far our best path to creating these new, globally competitive jobs and to stimulating growth. Our research shows that a $30 billion stimulus investment in just three areas -- healthcare IT, smart electric grids and broadband -- could yield almost one million new jobs within one year.
This is possible because these kinds of smart infrastructure will have a significantly greater multiplier effect for our economy’s growth over the next decade. We needn’t simply repair what’s broken. Rather, we can prepare a smarter and more vibrant America for the 21st century.
So, I and my peers encourage all leaders in business and government to embrace your vision and to work with the Congress, so that we can quickly get on with the work at hand – to build a vibrant, globally competitive economy.

President Obama responded, "But even as this plan puts Americans back to work, it will also make the critical investments in alternative energy, in safer roads, better health care and modern schools that will lay the foundation for long-term growth and prosperity, and will invest in broadband and emerging technologies, like the ones imagined and introduced to the world by people like Sam and so many of the CEOs here today, because that's how America will retain and regain its competitive edge in the 21st century."
